The Chase: Paranoia
By Alistair Wickens
There seems to be a blossoming hardcore scene (again) here, 10 years after the last wave seemed to fade away. Little has changed musically in the scene since then and there's little to distinguish The Chase from any of the other bands in NZ (although the hardcore scene has always been centred in Auckland). Their lyrics are a little more intelligent than many of the other bands in their chosen genre - in fact the quotes after each song’s lyrics in the inlay point to a well-read band, something that’s always been a factor in hardcore. But it somehow becomes a little in your face and it’s hard not to think of it as trying too hard to show other people how intelligent The Chase are. I somehow found it hard to shake the feeling that it’s all been done before. Once they’ve spent a little more time making their instruments really work for them perhaps a little exploration outside the harcore mould could produce some exciting results, as the passion is there.
