MorPhiscradle: Primer
By Peter Dent
Deep, deep, deep! If you like intense folk-based music by intense singer-songwriters, check out this, the third offering from Mark Duxfield, aka Morphiscradle. Extremely poetic lyrics in the Bob Dylan vein, delivered with depth, sincerity and panache. Duxfield's voice, although suffering from an over-abundance of vibrato, is earthy and unique. He also features on guitars and bass. Guests include drummer David Paul, guitarist Adam Roberts and cellist Paul Williams. 'Primer' was recorded at three different studios; in Auckland (Heather St and Ghostwood) and Palmerston North's The Stomach, by William Percy, Cale Heitariki, Hayden Sinclair and Chris Llyod. The cover art, although understated, is highly effective. Advisory: despite the name this is not an album for the faint-hearted!
