Percieve: Second Chances
By Martyn Pepperell
Wellington-based hip hop artist Percieve is both rapper and beatmaker. His debut album comes across as a mixture of ‘80s and G-Funk-influenced beat production, juxtaposed with witty, rhyme pattern driven-by-reality lyricism, seemingly centered around a car crash that almost took his life circa 2005. Self-mixed, engineered, recorded and arranged, ‘Second Chances’ has a strong DIY Wellington hip hop aesthetic which appeals but is a double edged sword. It suffers from sub-par engineering at points and I had an uncomfortable difficultly understanding the vocal performances at times. On the other hand, Percieve’s overall vision has resulted in some catchy songs like Whoa (F%*k You) Remix and Good To Me. He shines best on collaborations, and this album is thoroughly riddled with them. Guests include Flowz, PNC, FortyOne, Ethical, Phrase, Soleternity (US), Lil Moe and more. Released through his own Perceive Music and 2Much Records
