New Telepathics: You Have Been Warned!

By Simon Sweetman
The New Telepathics are a collective formed around the musically schizophrenic ideas of Darryn Harkness (contributing vocals, bass, guitars, keyboards). Recorded at Harkness’ Institute of Telepathic Research in Germany, this seven track flits through dub, jazz, ambient and industrial, never settling on one style. It’s impressive, but ultimately a tad confusing - what does the group really sound like? The playing is superb, no question. But there’s no guarantee that if you like one song you’ll like the next. Personally, I rather admire that - because I think the playing stands up and the ideas are smart, the songs are strong. But there’s no one style to use as a ready endorsement. Kiwi-born Harkness is based abroad and here he has hooked up with former members of The Orb and the Sun Ra Arkestra - all very impressive. Live shows would be the way to really see what the New Telepathics are about. For those looking for something new and eclectic I would certainly recommend it.
