Black Market Art: Kids

By Stephanie Corne
Hailing from the chilly primrose pastures of Christchurch, young trio Black Market Art arrive with their first album, a competent, confident and developed debut. You’d be forgiven for assuming Black Market Art were simply the next derivative indie group on the block, drawing from the hyper-diluted well of Joy Division, The Cure et al - refreshingly, this young act actually manages to maintain a little originality. Employing glockenspiel, electro autoharp, harpsichord, organ and a solid base of drums, bass and guitar the simple yet effective10 track CD is made up of six studio recordings (from various Christchurch studios), and four live songs. Experimenting with country, rock, jazz and even a little gypsy, they showcase musical chops beyond their years. Formerly known as Gettin’ Lucky In Kentucky and Darian Woods and The Lumberjacks, they come with a sense of humour and lyrically include a little social commentary with tracks Yell and Yell, I Live For Now and Corner Song. The vocals are often Dylan-esque, but also give nods to the Velvet Underground (Grey Bench Blues) and Kings Of Leon (I Want To Die). The trio add in their own twists and turns with endearing jazz interludes (Spots and All) and have undoubtedly cobbled together a fine debut album. Expect to hear more from these particular indie up and comings.
